How we choose

Five is a deliberate number. Athens has more than four hundred hotels above the three-star line, and a longer list would only flatten the differences that matter. We include a property when it satisfies three tests: it has a defensible sense of place, it delivers a service standard that survives a full house in August, and it offers something no other hotel in the city can copy — a 150-year archive, a rooftop pool at Parthenon height, thirty hectares of private coast, a seawater spa, or an address that has been part of Greek public life for a century.

We pay for our own rooms at standard public rates, decline hosted stays, and re-verify facilities, closures and lead-in pricing every six months. Where a hotel is undergoing renovation, we say so. Where a view is oversold in the room description, we say that too.

Read more about the method on our About page, or send a question to the Athens desk.
