City or Coast?

Two of these hotels face the Acropolis across Syntagma Square. Two sit on private sand at Vouliagmeni, 40 minutes south. One is a 46-key boutique in the shadow of the rock itself.

The Premise

A short list, deeply reported

Athens no longer asks you to choose between archaeology and comfort. Within a 25-kilometre arc you can wake to the Parthenon from a nineteenth-century balcony, or to the Saronic Gulf from a cabana built into a pine slope. These five properties define that arc — and this guide explains exactly which one suits which traveller.

Geography

Two Athens, forty minutes apart

Choosing a hotel here is really choosing a version of the city.

The historic centre — Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki — puts the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora and the changing of the guard within a fifteen-minute walk. You trade quiet for immediacy: scooters at 8am, marble light at 8pm, and a rooftop table where the rock is floodlit above your glass.

The Athens Riviera runs south from Faliro through Glyfada and Voula to Vouliagmeni and Cape Sounion. Here the city becomes a coastline of pine, limestone and clear water. Transfers to Syntagma take 30–45 minutes by car depending on traffic; the airport is closer than the Acropolis.

Our advice for a first week: three nights in the centre, three nights on the coast. Every hotel in this guide is built for one half of that itinerary.
